Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high-performance analog solutions, today announced an ultra-low-resistance dual analog switch. The ISL84684 is a true bi-directional switch with less than 0.5 Ohms of resistance over the full input signal range for lower signal loss and lower distortion of midi and voice signals. This device is ultra-small for space-constrained applications in cellular phones and other handheld devices.
“Handheld devices increasingly incorporate new audio capabilities such as MP3 playback and FM radios that demand higher signal quality than traditional cellphone voice requirements,” said Chris Ludeman, marketing manager of Intersil’s Switch and MUX product group. “Intersil’s ISL84684 has significantly lower Ron (on resistance) and THD (total harmonic distortion) at low supply voltages to readily meet customer needs.”
Low Distortion, Small Size and Expanded Supply Voltage Range
Intersil’s ISL84684 is a low ON-resistance, low voltage, bi-directional, dual single-pole/double-throw (SPDT) analog switch designed for minimal distortion to signals in the audio range. With a signal-to-distortion figure of 78dB, the ISL84684 will not compromise MP3 or FM radio performance.
Cellular phone designers often face the need for rapid feature addition for new markets or customers. The number of analog input pins on baseband chipset devices may be limited and digital geometries may not be well suited for optimal analog performance. In such instances, the ISL84684 may be used to “mux-in” additional functionality such as MP3 playback and FM radio, while reducing design risk and occupying minimal additional board area. It consists of two normally open (NO) and two normally closed (NC) switches. This configuration can be used as a dual 2-to-1 multiplexer.
The ISL84684 has a single +1.8V to +4.5V supply that allows the device to operate from 2-cell NiMH or alkaline batteries and directly off a single-cell Li-Ion battery for a larger signal output range. The digital logic input is 1.8V logic-compatible over the full supply range.
