Agilent Technologies Introduces Surface-Mount Millimeter-Wave Amplifiers

Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today announced the expansion of its family of millimeter-wave (mmW) integrated circuits to include low-cost, surface-mount amplifiers operating in the 20 to 40 GHz frequency range. These packaged parts allow manufacturers to transfer production to lower-cost, surface-mount techniques rather than using today’s chip and wire manufacturing that requires complex tuning and assembly processes. These surface-mount devices offer performance comparable to the “bare die” mmW ICs.


The new product family consists of seven devices. The Agilent AMMP-6231 is a high-performance low noise amplifier ideally suited for 18-30 GHz receive chains, featuring fully integrated input and output DC blocking capacitors, bias choke, and single-supply self-bias. The Agilent AMMP-6345 and AMMP-5040 are driver amplifiers for 20-45 GHz broadband applications. The AMMP-5024 is a traveling-wave amplifier operating from 100 MHz to 40 GHz. Two of the new products, AMMP-6425 and AMMP-6430, are high-performance 1-watt power amplifiers for use in frequencies from 18 to 30 GHz. These power amplifiers are ideal for transmit chains in point-to-point, point-to-multipoint and VSAT radio applications. The final product, the Agilent AMMP-6130, is a frequency multiplier with integral driver amplifier operating in the 30 GHz satellite band.


These new devices complement the surface-mount products in the 6-20 GHz range (AMMP-5618, 6120, 6220, 6530) introduced in June 2004. Together they provide a complete transmit solution for millimeter-wave applications from 6 to 40 GHz. All devices are fabricated using the proven 0.15 m pHEMT process.


“Customers developing millimeter-wave equipment are enthusiastic about converting to surface-mount active devices to reduce their manufacturing costs through automated assembly,” said Ho King Pieng, worldwide marketing manager for the Wireless Semiconductor Division in Agilent’s Semiconductor Products Group “This expanded family of economical surface-mount millimeter-wave products allows our customers to move to lower-cost manufacturing with products from a single, reliable vendor without any decrease in performance.”


The AMMP series packaged millimeter-wave IC devices are compatible with high-volume, surface-mount PCB assembly processes, including pick-and-place and reflow soldering. The backside of the ceramic package is both RF and DC ground, which helps simplify the assembly process and reduces assembly-related performance variations and costs. The packages are lead-free and RoHS (Directive 2002/95/EC on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment) compliant.


The new devices offer the following performance characteristics:

oAMMP-6231, 18 to 30 GHz low noise amplifier (LNA), features 3.0 dB noise figure, 20 dB nominal gain and output third-order intercept point (OIP3) greater than +18 dBm. It operates from a single +3 V bias at 55 mA.

oAMMP-6345, 20 to 45 GHz driver amplifier, features a linear output power (P-1dB) of +23 dBm, 20 dB nominal gain and OIP3 of +39dBm. It operates from + 5 VDC at 500 mA.

oAMMP-5040, 25 to 35 GHz driver amplifier, provides +20 dBm P-1dB, 22 dB nominal gain, and +30 dBm OIP3, with bias of 4.5 V at 300mA

oAMMP-5024, 100 MHz to 40 GHz broadband traveling wave amplifier (TWA), offers +22 dBm P-1dB, 16 dB nominal gain, and 5 dB NF, with 7V, 300 mA bias.

oAMMP-6425, 25 to 30 GHz GHz power amplifier, provides +29 dBm P-1dB, 20 dB nominal gain with operation from 5 V at 800 mA.

oAMMP-6430, 18 to 27 GHz power amplifier, provides +29 dBm P-1dB, 20 dB nominal gain with operation from 5 V at 800 mA.

oAMMP-6130, 30-GHz-output frequency multiplier with amplifier, features 16 dB nominal gain, +20 dBm P-1dB, and single-bias operation: 3.5 V, 300 mA.
