Production switchers offer multi-format signal handling and simultaneous parallel processing of SD and HD signals. With the move to DTV, the production switcher is a central element within a modern TV production chain, and must be capable of handling and optimizing new types of input signal formats. This shows a typical architecture for a production switcher supporting both SD and HD I/O cards. The input to the signal chain is an adaptive cable equalizer, which automatically compensates for signal distortion caused by the coaxial cable. A crosspoint switch allows physical interconnection between an input source and an output destination. The blocks following the crosspoint switch support processing the video data. The deserializer / descrambler block converts the serial input to parallel format, either 10-bits for SD or 20-bits for HD. Processing of the data is typically a function of Digital Signal Processing (DSP), and this may be implemented using dedicated DSP chips or as logic with a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). Finally the parallel data is fed into the serializer that includes an integrated cable driver to transmit the serial data to another location. The control and power systems within a production switcher include many other products that National can supply including voltage regulators, amplifiers, and interface products such as RS-232 or RS-422 for linking to control systems. Modern systems also include a LAN (Ethernet), which allows communication between control panels, and peripherals to support file transfers, setup, as well as remote monitoring and system management.
