New Japan Radio Co., Ltd. is proud to announce the NJW4120, a
battery charger control IC that enables easy, safe and highly efficient charging for the
Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries that power DSCs (Digital Still Cameras) and DVCs
(Digital Video Cameras). The NJW4120 is also engineered for use in Li-ion battery
chargers for DSC, DVC, PDA, and other portable devices.
Thanks to their high energy density, Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries have recently become
more in-demand for small, lightweight portable devices that require long battery life,
such as DSCs and DVCs. However, charging a Li-ion battery properly requires accurate
controls: the charging current, voltage, temperature, charging time and malfunction
prevention feature must all be precisely monitored. Because of this, charging circuits tend
to become complicated and for the exclusive use of particular products. There have been
only two ways to properly address these issues: use a purpose-built analog IC or
configure the circuit with a micro-computer and analog circuit.
For this purpose, New Japan Radio developed the NJW4120, a secure, consumer-friendly
Li-ion battery charger control IC for highly efficient multi-purpose use. The NJW4120
features an adjustable setting for the charging current and charging voltage
(conventionally, the voltage, current, thermistor specification and temperature range are
all assigned). Therefore, it is compatible with both 1-cell and 2-cell applications, and the
charging current can be set according to the size of the battery. Board sharing is also
possible. Moreover, using a photocoupler that directly controls the output voltage from
the adapter by sensing the charging output voltage, the NJW4120 minimises heat
generation in ways conventional ICs cannot. This ensures a much higher efficiency, since
conventional charging control circuits controls the voltage, which generates excessive
heat. We also offer a versatile lineup of LED lights for custom-fit sequence displays
during battery charging.New Japan Radio Releases NJW4120 Li-ion Battery Charger
