RFMD® (NASDAQ: RFMD),a leading provider of proprietary radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) for wireless communications applications,announced volume shipments of the RF5924, the industry's first front-end module (FEM) designed specifically for embedded wireless LAN (WLAN) applications in cellular handsets.
RFMD's RF5924 is a complete front-end module that requires no external components, enabling the smallest footprint area of any 802.11g front-end module on the market today. Featuring a WLAN power amplifier (PA), switch and receive balun, the RF5924 provides all the required functions between the RF transceiver and the system BPF/antenna. With all RF ports 50-ohm matched, the RF5924 is designed to ease system implementation and reduce product development time.
"RFMD is leveraging its leadership in cellular power amplifiers and extending it into the WLAN power amplifier market," said Rohan Houlden, Director of RFMD's Network Components Product Line. "The RF5924 is the first offering in a dedicated line of mobile WLAN components that address all bands and standards and continue RFMD's heritage of delivering industry-leading technology to emerging, high-growth markets."
Designed for easy integration into mobile phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and other portable battery powered devices, the RF5924 provides higher data throughput and greater WLAN coverage. The performance characteristics of the RF5924 specifically address the requirements of advanced wireless applications, such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), which are driving the adoption of WLAN in handsets and the creation of new WLAN standards.
Key features of the RF5924 include:
Package: 3.5x3.5x1.4mm module
Pout =16dBm, 11g, OFDM<3.3% EVM
Direct battery connection
Single 3.1V to 4.5V supply voltage
Integrated 2.5GHz b/g amplifier, RX balun and switch
Bluetooth® port - shared antenna between WLAN and Bluetooth systems
